PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- A child headed to school in Port Charlotte Wednesday was injured when they were hit by a vehicle.
According to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, it happened at 8:30 a.m. near Peace River Elementary on Beaver Lane.
Deputies say a vehicle was attempting to pull out from the Cedar Woods community, down the street from the school. The driver was waiting for traffic on Beaver Lane to clear and was stopped over the sidewalk in the driveway.
While the vehicle was stopped, an 8-year-old girl on a bicycle attempted to go around the vehicle but was knocked over when the driver put the vehicle in motion again.
The child was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
No word yet on whether the driver is facing any charges yet.
The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office reminds drivers that it is very important to not only be mindful of school zone speeds, but also children in the area of these zones and bus stops.
