CAPE CORAL, Fla.,-- Alicia Medina, 60, was hit and dragged by an SUV while walking up Del Prado Boulevard by an alleged drunk driver. Now, her family is speaking out, telling Fox 4 she remains in critical condition 12 days after the crash.

“I spent Mother’s Day next to her at the hospital," said Diego J. Medina, Alicia's son.

Diego says his mother needed nearly 60 units of blood and still remains in the trauma unit at Lee Memorial Hospital.

"How this person was that drunk at 2 p.m on a Sunday," he said. “I will absolutely spend every ounce of effort to try to understand.”

According to the Cape Coral Police Department, the driver of the vehicle, Colleen Mulder, was operating the SUV with a blood alcohol level almost three times the legal limit. Now, Diego is searching for answers and enlisted the help of private investigator, Walter Zalisko.

“The goal of this investigation is to get as many people that may have witnessed the accident," said Zalisko.

Zalisko says he's looking for anyone with more information of the accident or characteristics to Mulder that would provide additional information to the case. Mulder was released this morning on a $1700 bail, something Zalisko says isn't unusual in this situation. He says the additional information will help the Medina family in a civil case. Diego says he wants Mulder to spend time behind bars.

“If you’re going to act like you’ve got nothing to lose, then you’re going to make someone lose everything, he said. “[Mulder is] free today and I’m in prison at Lee Memorial.”

The Medina family is asking the public to donate blood in the name of Maria Alicia Medina. They say it is their way of giving back after watching Alicia try to heal from her injuries. You can donate on the Lee Memorial Website: www.leehealth.org/bloodcenter/
