FGCU Students worry about security after Michigan shooting

Although a fatal shooting on the campus of Central Michigan University is hundreds of miles away from Estero, it was on the minds of Florida Gulf Coast University students Friday.

"You  never know what's going to happen, you just walk into class one day and something could happen, because it's happening a lot more and it's pretty scary," said Freshman Cas Pikuza.

Student say the police conduct safety seminars on campus, but they don't focus on active shooters.

"They have optional seminars, but they don't give us amy information really, if I heard I shooting I would just run type of thing," said Pikuza.

FGCU Police didn't respond to 4-In-Your-Corner's request for comment on whether they will be beefing up security after the latest shooting.

On its website university police have a link to a video about how to survive a mass shooting.

Students say they received emails from campus police shortly after the Parkland shooting.

But some say the school needs to be more proactive with security.

"Letting less people on campus, I know there are a lot of locals that just walk on campus for stuff to do, besides that, a lot of classrooms do this already, locking the doors," said Freshman Patrick Sales.

FGCU students can text a complaint about a potential crime or disturbance to campus police, and they can also sign up for the Guardian Eagle app to get safety alerts.
