TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — A Florida man has died days after he was hit by a truck while riding an electric scooter that was rented through his city.

A witness saw 33-year-old John Michael Edgerton riding the scooter and failing to stop for a semi-trailer truck that had pulled onto another street, according to Tampa police.

Police initially said the man suddenly veered into the path of the truck. The June 20 crash is still under investigation, but officials said Edgerton was not wearing a helmet.

The city of Tampa launched the pilot program last month offering shared scooters for rent through an app. It encourages, but does not require the use of a helmet.
