A former Sarasota County deputy has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for exploiting an elderly woman he befriended while on the job.

46-year-old Frank Bybee was sentenced Thursday. Last month, he was convicted of kidnapping, exploitation of the elderly, three counts of computer fraud and eight counts of fraudulent use of personal information.

Investigators say Bybee was working for the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office when he met the victim. He forged checks for $65,000 in the woman's name. Bybee also sold the woman's dog on Craigslist.

The woman also accused Bybee of breaking into her home and attempting to kill her and frame it as suicide. Bybee was found not guilty of attempted murder.
