FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. --- After a 4 to 1 vote plastic straws are no longer allowed on Fort Myers Beach.
Fort Myers Beach Town Council passed an ordinance Monday that banned plastic straws from the beach.
The order will go into effect 90 days after passing and will prohibit businesses and restaurants from handing out any straws.
Beachgoers will not be able to bring straws onto the beach, unless they are part of a pre-packaged drink like juice boxes.
People with straws on the beach that are caught by police officers will receive a warning. Citations will only be given to repeat offenders, which will cost a fine up to $500 per notice.
Marco Island is considering a similar ban.
