FORT MYERS, Fla. — Crime is definitely on the rise in Fort Myers. Last week police put a warning about a series of break-ins across Fort Myers that included 5 commercial property break-ins, 5 residential properties, and 45 auto burglaries, all due to unlocked doors.

Tonight police say the string of crimes are continuing since last Friday there have been 15 additional car burglaries and 5 vehicles have been stolen.

“The biggest thing that they all have in common is vehicles are unlocked,” said Officer Bill Schettino

One viewer sent us a video showing of suspected car burglars inside the Villas at Venezia Apartment Complex on Metro parkway and Winkler.

In the video, the alleged suspect is seen pulling on the doors of vehicles, and in the second video, another alleged suspect can be seen walking through the parking lot looking for his next target.

Police say in order to protect yourself from becoming a victim, it’s as simple as locking your car door and taking your keys inside.

“It’s something that we preach, we’ve been preaching it for a long time. You need to lock your stuff up, it needs to become muscle memory,” said Officer Bill Schettino.

Officer Schettino says gated communities in his district have become a hot target.

“They leave their vehicles unlocked and now with technology, the key fobs have become an item that people are leaving in their cars,” said Officer Bill Schettino.

Officer Schettino is urging everyone to call the police if they see something unusual.

“So if you see something that looks suspicious you need to contact us and let us know. This stuff happens everywhere, doesn’t matter if its Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Naples, you know this stuff happens all over the place, unlocked vehicles are going to get broken into,” said Officer Bill Schettino.
