Gator trappers busy this time of year

It was a busy Friday for alligator trapper Ray Simonsen.

He caught two gators in Collier County and nearly bagged a third, after someone spotted one at a neighborhood off Lakewood Drive.

"It may be 25 to 30 feet off shore and it is still looking at me."

Simonsen uses a piece of PVC pipe with a hook to haul these massive creatures to shore.

"I don't need to go to the gym when you got to wrangle these things, even a 4 foot gator can get out of your hands."

But there is little margin for error, or the results can be fatal.

"You gotta be on your game 110 percent of the time, you turn your head one second, that could be your finger, your hand, your arm."

Despite the risks, Simonsen says he does this because he care about these animals.

"It's a passion, I treat every gator like it's the first time I touched it."

Ray will takes most of the gators he catches to a preserve in Labelle.

It is illegal to feed or harm gators in Florida, doing so will make them more aggressive.
