CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- Move over, Punxsutawney Phil! Cape Coral has plans to have its own critter look for its shadow on February 2nd, and it needs a name.
The Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife is planning the 1st annual "Ground-Owl Day" in which a resident burrowing owl will check for its shadow on February 2nd to see if six more weeks of "winter weather" is in store in Cape Coral.
And they need your help naming the owl. You can email your name ideas to namethatowl@gmail.com. Be sure to include your name and telephone number. The contest runs through January 20th.
Ground‐Owl Proclamation Day will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. at the Rotary Community Garden just north of City Hall. Mayor Coviello will issue the proclamation and announce who won first, second and third place in the Owl Naming Contest.
Prizes are as follow:
1st Place ‐ 1‐ year family membership to Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife, 4 free admission tickets to the Burrowing Owl Festival on 2/23/19 at Rotary Park, 1 CCFW T‐shirt, 1 hat & 2 free tickets for the Nature of Cape Coral Bus Tour.
2nd Place ‐ 1‐year family membership to Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife, 2 free admission tickets to the Burrowing Owl Festival on 2/23/19 at Rotary Park, 1 CCFW T‐shirt & 2 free tickets for the Nature of Cape Coral Bus Tour.

If the winning name has been submitted by more than one person, the first submission of the name will be the winner.
