HENDRY COUNTY, Fla. — Deputies arrested Anthony “AJ” Blackman Wednesday for allegedly hitting his wife. Sheriff Steve Widden described Blackman as an outstanding deputy, but said he has to hold all of his employees to a higher standard.

“It’s definitely a loss for us, but again, you have to make better decisions, especially when you’re law enforcement,” he said.

Deputies arrested Blackman at his wife’s job Wednesday morning, but deputies said the alleged abuse didn’t happen there.

According to the report first it happened at their home last month. It said Blackman threw his wife to the ground and held her down. It said last week a verbal argument turned physical leaving bruising near his wife’s ear.

The report also stated Blackman’s wife had to tell him where she was and what she was doing at all times or he would come looking for her.

Blackman joined Hendry County Sheriff’s Office three years ago. Sheriff Whidden said Blackman worked as a k-9 officer.

“He was a likable guy, did his job well. I feel he went above and beyond, responded when called. He was a good deputy,” he said.

So, Sheriff Whidden said he was surprised to hear reports that Deputy Blackman allegedly physically and verbally abused his wife recently.

“It’s a sad situation. He was a good deputy and I liked him, but, unfortunately, we’re not going to tolerate it,” he said.

Blackman is charged with battery and domestic violence.
