LEE COUNTY, Fla. - The former varsity basketball coach at Fort Myers High School has landed a new job, one day after his resignation.
Tuesday, Scott Guttery resigned from his position with the Lee County School District. Wednesday, he was named the coach at Evangelical Christian School.
In May, Coach Guttery was placed on leave as deputies investigated a "hard-foul" he committed against a student during a pickup game. Deputies eventually cleared Guttery, but the district still reprimanded him.
During a school board meeting last month, Guttery was very critical of how the district handled things. "There have been many disturbing things that I have discovered about our school district and the policies in place pertaining to employees and accusations of misconduct. Our district is in the habit of listening to disgruntled parents and lawyer accusations and reacting to those accusations before speaking with their employee or employee's direct supervisor."
The school district has since released a statement saying it is disappointed that Guttery felt it was necessary to resign. But they say the facts support their decision, and that it's their responsibility to make sure students are safe.
