PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla — The Florida Department of Health in Charlotte County says a human case of the West Nile virus has been confirmed in the county.
They issued a mosquito-borne illness alert for Charlotte County on Friday.
DOH-Charlotte says there is a heightened concern additional residents will become ill.
They also say a sentinel chicken has tested positive for the West Nile, and the risk of spreading to humans has increased.
DOH-Charlotte and Charlotte County Mosquito Control will continue their surveillance and prevention efforts.
They want to remind people to take basic precautions to limit exposure and avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.
The department also wants to remind people to "Drain and Cover" and that Drain standing water to stop mosquitos from multiplying.
