FORT MYERS, Fla — The Fort Myers Police Department says there has been an increase in burglaries in the area.
They say over the past 21 days they have seen more than 50 break-ins in the city.
"Majority of the burglaries are very preventable; it's simply by locking your car," Officer Valone Williams with FMPD said.
FMPD says there have been five commercial break-ins, five residential and 45 auto burglaries, all due to unlock doors.
Officer Williams works in one of the hardest-hit areas of Golfview and gives out these tips to prevent break-ins from happening to you.
"Removing valuables from your vehicle, whether it's your purse or loose change in the glove compartments. And especially make sure you're removing your guns from your vehicle," Officer Williams said.
We checked out some local businesses near another hard hit area between Jeffcott Blvd. and Edison Ave. One business owner tells me he has not seen anything suspicious.
“Well, it's very impressive because like I said I’ve been in this area for like 10 years most and I never have any problem with my business,” said J. Figueroa.
Figueroa says you can never be too careful.
“In the evening we just lock the doors and camera in the store. The only thing that we can do is pray that nobody come and rob your place or hurt you in your own place when you’re working,” said Figueroa.
Fort Myers Police is urging anyone if you see anything suspicious do not hesitate to give them a call.
