CAPE CORAL, Fla., -- There was an eight cent increase in gas prices overnight, according to a new AAA report. Local charter fisherman says it's out on the water where people are feeling it the most.
“It’s a big deal when it jumps that high, especially for three weeks its jumped," said Captain Jonathon Black, owner of the Crazy Lure Bait and Tackle shop.
Black says the Lake Okeechobee water releases force boaters to drive further out to sea and therefore spend more money on fuel.
“Now I’m having to run 4, 6, 8 miles offshore to clean water. I’m doubling my gas way out to get to clean water.”
A spokesperson for AAA says the large jump overnight is due to operational issues.
“A series of refineries that were dealing with operational issues," explained Mark Jenkins. "Once that came to light on Monday, gas prices increased.”
As for the gas prices coming down, Jenkins says it will be gradual.
“Gas prices rise like a rocket and they fall like a feather.”
Captain Black says the closest clean water is towards Sanibel. AAA tells 4 in your corner they expect prices to go down "soon."
