COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. -- Troopers have temporarily closed a 58-mile stretch of Tamiami Trail east of Naples Tuesday while fire crews work to battle an ongoing fire.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, at 2:30 p.m., Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41) was shut down between State Road 29 near Everglades City and Krome Avenue near Miami.

The closure is expected to last for several hours, but can be subject to change due to changing conditions.

U.S. Forestry has requested the closure so crews can maneuver heavy fire equipment in the area.

A massive wildfire has been burning inside the Big Cypress National Preserve.  The U.S. Fish and Wildlife service says the fire has scorched more than 3,300 acres.

Crews say the flames are burning a mixture of grass, pine, and cypress habitat.  No structures have been threatened.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
