Fort Myers Beach slapped with parking lawsuit

The owners of the Lani Kai are suing the city of Fort Myers Beach for parking issues at a neighboring establishment.

The hotel is accusing the city of not cracking down on Shuckers, which they say is parking too many cars in its lot.

"They're now double and triple parking cars in their lot and that's causing cars to back up onto Estero Boulevard and causing traffic jams," said Lani Kai Attorney Ralf Brookes.

Brookes says the Cottage's restaurant Shuckers was originally licensed as just a hotel bar, but is now operating late into the night and is too loud for guests at the Lani Kai.

The lawsuit would force Ft. Myers Beach to have a hearing about the issue.

"At that special exception hearing we would go there and object because they don't have enough parking spaces on their property. We would object because their outdoor amplified music is too close to our hotel," said Brookes.

The staff at Shuckers say they had just heard about the lawsuit and could not comment.

The Lani Kai says the lawsuit will also shine the light on the overall lack of parking on the island, which they say is hurting their guests.

"I don't want to half to park two blocks down in order to get to my hotel room, no. They should have enough parking for the suites that they have," said Lani Kai guest Stephanie Espersen.

And it isn't just hotels, smaller businesses like the Big Kahuna pizza shop are feeling the parking pain.

"A lot of them have been taking Uber," said owner Cole Lavalle.

Ft. Myers Beach City Manager Roger Hernstadt, he says he can't comment on the case.
