LEE COUNTY, Fla. — Sheriff Carmine Marceno says he used taxpayer money to travel to a celebration, and he does not regret it.
Marceno posted on FacebookThursday night.
The Sheriff says he and members of his command staff traveled to Tallahassee in January.
Marceno says they made the trip to attend a Florida Highway Patrol's retirement ceremony in honor of Chief Derek Barrs.
"I’m proud that members of my Command Staff devoted their time to honor Chief Barrs, and for the opportunity to exchange ideas and insights with their F.H.P. peers. If his retirement ceremony was held tomorrow, I would once again travel to Tallahassee to demonstrate our respect and appreciation for Chief Barrs," Sheriff Marceno said on Facebook Thursday night .
Marceno says the trip was coordinated through the Lee County Sheriff's Office's Training Division.
He also says it was reviewed and documented through LCSO's finance department.
"The benefit Lee County receives from the very positive and cooperative relationship with the Florida Highway Patrol far outweighs the cost of participating in the retirement ceremony for this tremendous leader," Sheriff Marceno said in his statement Thursday night.
