LEE COUNTY, Fla. — Investigators are trying to determine what caused a fire in Cape Coral.

Cape Coral Fire Department (CCFD) tells Fox 4 the fire sparked at a home on Southeast 16th Street earlier Monday morning.

The Fire Department also tells Fox 4 that when they arrived on the scene they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the front of the house and the roof.

Lee County Emergency Management Services transported one of the residents for potential smoke inhalation.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames and keep them from spreading to the garage, therefore saving the residents’ cars.

The CCFD said both occupants and their dog made it out safely.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames and keep them from spreading.

The home was red-tagged by the building inspector, and Red Cross is assisting with the temporary house.

The cause was determined to be accidental due to smoking while using oxygen.

The resident thought he had shut his oxygen off before lighting his cigarette, but he had not.
