LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. — Dozens of local businesses came together to donate school supplies to over 300 children in the Lehigh Acres community.

The last several months at home have been quite an adjustment for many families.

“If anyone has kids or teenage kids they know how much they eat and it's crazy how much the electric bills go up. I feel bad for everybody right now so this is a genuine blessing, ” said Deborah Smith.

Cathy Fellows has two children and was forced to take a major pay cut due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I lost a lot from work with everything going on and haven’t recouped any of that yet, so any little thing helps with them going back to school, ” said Fellows.

Donors and community volunteers helped to lighten the load for families in need.

“This type of situation calls for the village to come together, ” said Gwynetta Glittens.

“We wanted to show our community that we’re here for them even though these tuff times, ” said an event coordinator.

The backpack drive-thru event helped to ensure a successful start to the 2020 school year.

“If kids don’t have their tools to do the work at school its impossible, they need backpacks, pencils, pens, and other things that they can use, ” said Larry Gregory.

Nicholas Hilton, a soon to be kindergartener, says he is excited for the year ahead.

“When I get to school I’m going to love it, and I’m going to make new friends, “ said Hilton.

“You know being a mom, he’s my firstborn I’m a little nervous but excited for him,” said Mycheal Hilton.

If you missed the event you may still be in luck, the coordinator says there may still be school supplies available, contact The Victory Church for more information.
