FORT MYERS, Fla. — Councilman Fred Burson kicked back Tuesday night and watched his hard work pay off.

“We have somebody that we all know playing in the game. It’ll be exciting tonight to watch him and I hope he does well,” he said.

The retired coach from Cishop Verot High School anticipated his old student Daniel Vogelbach walk onto the field, but this time Vogelbach plays for the Seattle Mariners in the All-Star Major League Baseball game. A moment Burson said he loves to watch, but he’s not surprised he made it to the league.

“Danny had a lot of God-given talent. And he’s like a lot of those guys… with good work ethic, he’ll get his shot. And he has,” he said.

Burson said all the hype around this game brings him back to 2011 when Vogelbach helped Bishop Verot win the state championship. He said he brought that same energy to Tuesday’s game.

“He loves the game and he’s full of energy. And he’s even that way right now,” he said. “His team loves him, fans love him and that’s because he’s fun to be around.”

Win or lose, Burson said he’s a proud coach.

“Regardless of what he does in life, he’ll be a winner. He is a winner!” he said.
