CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- A Cape Coral man is facing animal cruelty charges after officers say he shot and killed his dog while intoxicated.

It happened Monday night around 10:45 p.m.

According to Cape Coral Police, witnesses reported seeing 23-year-old Korey Potts' mixed breed dog Gordo running around his house before hearing gunshots and seeing Potts lying near the dog in a vacant lot.

Potts' roommate saw him in the yard with the handgun, took it, and threw it into the vacant lot. She brought Potts inside the home.

Officers arrived to find Gordo lying in the vacant lot, appearing to be deceased.

Potts exited the home, crying and telling officers that he shot his dog. Potts admitted drinking earlier.

Potts was charged with the Aggravated Animal Cruelty, Discharging a Firearm in a Public of Residential Property and Using a Firearm While Under the Influence of an Alcoholic Beverage.
