LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- A Punta Gorda man has been convicted of Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer after a violent incident in the parking lot of a gas station earlier this year.
37-year-old Lawrance Washka was found guilty after a 1-day trial in Lee County.
According to the State Attorney's Office, in February, deputies responded to the gas station after reports of a suspicious person asking customers for their names and identification as he drove around the parking lot.
When deputies got him to stop, they say he refused to respond to their commands and would not get out of the car.
Washka began resisting when they removed him from the car, during which time he bit a deputy on the arm, accusing them of not being "the real police".
The deputy was taken to the hospital for treatment. Washka was taken into custody and taken to the hospital due to his behavior.
