CAPE CORAL, Fla. - A driver attempting to avoid police after a crash made it eight blocks before running a red light and being stopped.

A Cape Coral police officer responded to a crash on Del Prado Boulevard near the Cape Coral Laundromat Sunday afternoon. At the same time, another officer stopped a red Hyundai SUV for allegedly running a red light at Cultural Park Boulevard and Hancock Bridge Parkway East.

While at the traffic stop, a witness approached the officer and said he had dash cam video of the crash the first officer was investigating, police said. He had only made it about eight blocks from the scene.

Officers identified the driver as Michael Newton and arrested him for hit and run with property damaged and knowingly driving on a suspended license. He was taken to Lee County Jail.
