Marco Island Police warn of scams related to Lieutenant's passing

MARCO ISLAND, Fla. — The Marco Island Police Department is warning the public about a scam that is going around after the untimely passing of Lieutenant Clayton Smith.

Lieutenant Smith was fatally injured in an off-duty motor vehicle crash on February 5th.

These telephone and internet-based scams are asking for funds related to his passing.

The Marco Island Police Department is asking you do not donate funds to any group unless they have indicated the fund-raising is legitimate.

A memorial service was held today in his honor.

A blood drive is being held also on February 14th from 9am to 2pm at the Marco Island Police Department.
