LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- A motorcyclist was killed Wednesday after crashing into a school bus full of students.

It happened just before 4pm on Pennsylvania Avenue in Bonita Springs.

Troopers say the bus was stopped to unload passengers in the westbound lanes near Playa Del Rey Lane. That’s when 22-year-old Ignacio Pedro failed to stop as he approached the bus from the rear.

He hit the left rear of the bus and was thrown from the motorcycle, while the motorcycle continued and crashed into a pickup truck.

Pedro, who was wearing a helmet at the time, was pronounced dead at the scene.

There were about 20 to 25 students on board at the time, but none of them were injured.

Extra counselors were on campus Thursday at Spring Creek Elementary School.

This message went to the parents Wednesday night:

Good evening Spring Creek Families, this is Principal Diane Sherman.

I just wanted to call to say how proud I am of your children.

They were calm and listened to all instructions during this afternoon’s accident.

Sadly, the driver of the motorcycle has passed away due to injuries.

While we did our best to make sure your child did not see anything upsetting, they may want to talk about it.

We will be checking on them tomorrow and have counselors on hand in case they need to talk.

I also urge you to give me a call if you’d like to share any information that your child shared with you.

Thank you, and have a good night.
