CAPE CORAL, Fla. — After a heated public hearing, Matlacha is staying intact, at least for now.

At Monday night's Cape Coral city council meeting, the longtime battle to annex six acres of land from the island was sqaushed.

This is land that the city of Cape Coral purchased in 2012.

Officials say they were hoping to annex the land in order to build a boat ramp and restaurant.

But after hours of testimony, tears and tempers flaring, the council decided to abandon the project.

"We've achieved our goal of keeping Cape Coral out of Matlacha, that was our goal," said Karl Deigert, the President of the Matlacha Civiv Association.

City council members have discussed selling the land, which Councilman John Carioscia says is worth $6 million dollars.
