NAPLES, Fla. -- A Collier County man will spend the rest of his life in prison for murdering his own mother.
33-year-old Yuzo Nishi was sentenced in court Wednesday.
According to the State Attorney’s Office, in June, Nishi was convicted of killing his mother, 51-year-old Maria Bertalmio, in December 2016.
It happened in the trailer they shared in Sunny Acres Mobile Village, in the 6300 block of Radio Road.
Deputies were called to the residence around 9:20 p.m. Sunday regarding a medical call. When deputies arrived, they discovered Bertalmio dead inside the living room area.
He was charged with second degree murder.
Nishi's attorney tried to get the charges knocked down to manslaughter. "The booking report indicates Mr. Nishi did call 911 himself, reported his mother had attacked him, and that she needed medical attention," said Nishi's attorney Jose Nunez.
Deputies have not said how Bertalmio died, although a knife was found at the scene.
Nishi was treated at the scene for stab wounds, and according to deputies.
