NORTH PORT, Fla. — NORTH PORT, Fla. — A brush fire in North Port on Horace Avenue near Duma Way reignited Sunday night. It was a close call for a family who lives just steps away from their backyard.

Erin Bewley said she was gardening in her front yard when she learned there was a brush fire behind her home.

“I heard a loud pop and then I noticed that the fire truck was here. I saw flames and a lot of smoke,” she said.

North Port Fire Rescue arrived after 3:00 p.m. Sunday to put out the 1/4 acre fire.

The fire reignited around 8:00 p.m. Sunday night. The second time it was on the other side of that lot. And fire crews knocked it down within minutes.

Bewley said she and her husband started preparing for worst case scenarios when the first brush fire broke out right behind her home.

“We took video of everything in the house, just in case it happened to come over towards the house. I was worried that it was going to go onto our roof,” she said. “Luckily the wind was blowing that way, away from our house.”

North Port Fire Rescue said this was a slow moving brush fire. They said no buildings were damaged and no one was injured as a result of the fire.

The cause of the brush fire is still under investigation. And the risk for fire danger is moderate for Charlotte County and the rest of Florida through Monday. Officials recommend taking extra precautions when doing any outdoor activities.
