CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. -- We're hearing directly from Punta Gorda Police Chief Tom Lewis that he was fired.
He says he's not sure why they fired him, but it is effective immediately.
The Punta Gorda Police Department has been under heavy scrutiny since the shooting death of Mary Knowltonlast year during a citizen's academy training exercise.
Chief Lewis was charged with misdemeanor culpable negligence in the case, but was found not guilty of the charge in June.
Officer Lee Coel, who fired the shot that killed Knowlton, was fired from the department earlier this year.
No other information as to the reason is available right now. We'll keep an eye out for a response from the city later Tuesday.
