FORT MYERS, Fla. — After days of isolation Boston Red Sox minor league player Chih-Jung Liu reunited with his team Friday.
Roaring fans for the Red Sox and Minnesota Twins packed Hammond Stadium Friday.
In the middle of all the fun, fan David Campe didn’t shy away from talking about something very serious. Coronavirus.
“I’m afraid that people just aren’t taking it seriously enough,” he said.
But a spokesperson for the Red Sox said they are. So much that they isolated pitcher Chih-Jng Liu when he returned from Taiwain last week.
While the player wasn’t at today’s game against the Twins, he did return to camp.
Red Sox fan Bob Tooke feels better knowing he was isolated.
“I think that’s the right thing the to do,” he said.
The team said Liu didn’t show any symptoms, and medical personnel monitored him. So, Twins fan Kari Wiese said why keep him away?
“He had no symptoms, I don’t see why they would have. Get where he was coming from, but if he had no symptoms, what was the point?” she asked.
The team said they were being overly cautious.
About 2,700 people have died from the coronavirus worldwide, and there’s about 60 cases of it in the U.S. But that’s not keeping fans from coming out.
“If and when it gets bigger, then I think people need to be more cautious. But like they say, just treat it like the flu season,” said Tooke.
The Twins won Friday’s game 4 to 1. Liu joined his team in minor league camp.
