CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. -- Sheriff Bill Prummell announced Thursday they will be charging Ryan Cole with murder in the 2nd degree and burglary with battery in the death of Khyler Edman.

15-year-old Edman died last month in a violent home invasion in which he was attempting to protect his younger sister during the crime.

Press conference: Ryan Cole charged with murder

On September 26th, Cole was seen acting suspicious in a neighborhood around Starlite Lane. He was later apprehended with a stab wound. Investigators later found Khyler dead in his home, where forced entry was found.

Sheriff Prummell said Khyler died protecting his younger sister.

Prummell said that over the last five weeks, detectives have been collecting, processing, and analyzing evidence in the case, and now have enough to file charges on Cole.

He denied any accusations that there was a previous relationship between the two parties. "We have found no evidence that there was any type of relationship between Cole and the residents there at that house."

The investigation is still active.
