Sanibel artist reflects on gun violence through art

Posted

LEE COUNTY, Fla.-- A Southwest Florida artist is using her craft to make a statement about gun control.

Myra Roberts says she created her pieces before the Parkland school shooting on February 14, 2018. She says her artwork was inspired by the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting. She created it when she saw signs advertising gun shows.

Roberts says works like hers are part of what being an artist is about, even though most people may expect only one type of art, "Beautiful and happy pieces, but also pieces that will stand the test of time and reflect history and will perhaps give people an idea that will make this world a better place to live."

Her artwork is on display at the Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center in downtown Fort Myers through Friday, February 23, 2018.
