LEE COUNTY, Fla.-- Florida Highway Patrol is looking for the driver involved in a deadly hit-and-run involving a dirt bike Tuesday night.
Florida Highway Patrol say the crash happened just before 7:30, at the intersection Lee Boulevard and Terry Avenue N. in Lehigh Acres.
FHP says 43-year-old Aumon Jackson was driving a dirt bike along Lee Boulevard without lights when a Nissan truck turned from Terry Avenue into the path of the dirt bike. The bike hit the truck, killing Jackson at the scene.
The truck's driver then ran away on foot.
The truck and dirt bike were transported as evidence to FHP's headquarters in Fort Myers. The trucks windshield was shattered on the drivers side, and the dirt bike was in pieces. FHP Lt. Greg Bueno said they are pursuing leads in the investigation. "We have also spoken to a few individuals who had access to this vehicle,' he said.
According to Lt. Bueno, the number of hit-and-run crashes continues climbing in Florida. In Lee County alone last year, there were nearly 3,000 hit-and-runs, eight of which were deadly. "It is staggering. What it shows is an irresponsibility on the part of people behind the wheel."
