LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. -- At least nine break-ins happened on Sunday in Lehigh Acres, right across from the Gateway neighborhood.
In the past month, several more crimes were reported in this area including grand theft, stolen vehicles and assault.
Residents say these crimes happen even when they're home. Blanca Rios has lived in Lehigh for over two years. She says she moved here from New York, assuming she would be away from crime. Her and her brother had just gone in the house for a few minutes when they were hit.
"It was a matter of not even three minutes. By the time we came back out, they had broken into his car and stolen his wallet," said Rios.
Another resident, Jacob Hoekstra, has had items stolen from his house before and then his car was broken into Sunday night.
He said, "The windows were all smashed, doors were open, everything was out of the car. We didn't know what they were looking for."
Now residents are looking for a solution to this problem. They are talking about installing security systems to make sure they are safe and to catch the people who keep doing this. They hope the people committing these crimes are caught.
