Strong winds damage homes in East Naples community

Residents in one Collier County neighborhood woke up to some heavy damage to their homes Friday, after strong winds tore through the Quail Roost community in East Naples around 6 a.m.

Sandra Walker, a home owner on Grosbeak Lane, said that the roof and siding of her screened lanai were ripped apart by the winds. The tangled debris then blew over her house, and landed in the front yard of her neighbor across the street.

"When I looked outside, my mouth was wide open," Walker said. "I was shocked, I could not believe it."

The storm also sent a two-by-four piece of wood from the destroyed structure through the roof and ceiling of her laundry room.

"It was very, very windy," Walker said. "Very heavy lightning, and a lot of rain."

While most homes in Quail Roost were spared major damage, the strong winds demolished a carport at a home farther down the street on Grosbeak Lane.

"I heard a noise that sounded like a freight train," said Jerry Candy, who lives next door to Walker. He has some minor damage to his roof, but he isn't complaining.

"We were lucky, to be honest with you," Candy said. "It could have been much worse."
