LEE COUNTY, Fla.-- If you plan to go on vacation before summer is over, the Lee County Sheriff's Office wants you to know how to protect your identity while traveling.
Miriam Dotson says to pack only what you need, especially when it comes to your wallet. Get rid of coupons and papers you don't use in your purse. Another tip is to use a credit card instead of a debit card to book flights, hotels and rental cars.
If you're staying at a hotel, make sure you only use secure Wi-Fi networks. People can set up fake Wi-Fi accounts and take your identity. Check with the hotel to see what kind of protected Wi-Fi they offer.
Dotson says you should also keep all of your money in one place so you don't lose it.
On Thursday, July 12, the Lee County Sheriff's Office is hosting a free "Safety Away From Home" seminar with tips to protect yourself and property. It will be at the United Healthcare Medicare Store on Daniels Parkway in Fort Myers at 10 a.m.
