PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- One person was killed in a deputy-involved shooting in Port Charlotte Thursday morning.

It happened early Thursday morning near Veterans Boulevard and Murdock Circle, near the Denny's and Hooters in the area.

In a news conference, Sheriff Bill Prummell said it started as a traffic stop for an equipment violation.

He said the passenger immediately got out of the car, and started shooting at deputies.

Those deputies returned fire, killing that passenger.

He said the shooter was rushed to the hospital, where he died.

The shooting is currently under investigation.
