CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- A house fire in NW Cape Coral Wednesday morning took the life of three pets, but no humans were injured.
Several fire crews responded to the fire shortly before 9 a.m. at a home on NW 2nd Street at 14th Avenue. That's just a few blocks south of Mariner Middle School.
Authorities say nobody was home when the fire broke out, but three dogs died.
A neighbor tells Fox 4 that they heard a loud lightning strike in the area just before fire trucks arrived.
Crews are working to find out the cause of the fire but believe lightning may be a cause.
Firefighters had to bring in tankers and use a nearby canal to access water.
Crews were able to put out the fire.
Part of the roof collapsed, and there are severe fire and smoke damage throughout the home.
