FORT MYERS, Fla., - The mother of Trayvon Martin, Sybrina Fulton met with local families who’ve lost a loved one to gun violence Friday.
Fulton was originally scheduled to speak at the annual Community Prayer Service Tuesday but she was unable to make it due to a scheduling conflict.
When Fulton took the stage Friday at Dunbar Community Center, she spoke from the heart, calling herself an ‘average’ person who faced a tragic circumstance.
“You’re going to live with this daily. Your heart is going to hurt,” Fulton said. “I still cry.”
Fulton’s son, Trayvon Martin, was gunned down by George Zimmerman while walking in his neighborhood unarmed in 2012. Zimmerman was acquitted in the case.
Fulton offered sympathy, encouragement and hope to parents who’ve also lost a child to gun violence and those who felt the justice system failed them.
“She kept it real with the moms. She made it comfortable,” said Camelia Sehley, who lost her son Angelo Gary to a gunman in 2006. No one has been charged in Gary’s death.
Fulton inspired parents to stay strong, while calling on community members and law enforcement to bridge the gap.
“I’m just trying to inspire them to keep it moving, to move on and to live and to do things that you enjoy,” Fulton said.
“We have to unite together so that we can make a bigger impact.”
Fort Myers Police Chief Derrick Diggs says the City saw a 37% decrease in murders last year.
