CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- Fox 4 got an inside peak at one of Southwest Florida’s busiest emergency rooms as Lee Health's Cape Coral Hospital is being recognized as one of the best in the state.

It’s called the Emergency Nurses Association Latern Award which recognizes emergency departments across the United State’s.

Cape Coral Hospital’s Emergency Department and Golisano Children’s Hospital are the only two in Southwest Florida to receive the award. There were six recipients across the state and 69 total in the country.

An Emergency Department has to show great leadership, practice, education, advocacy, and research when applying.

The ED in Cape Coral sees more than 70,000 patients a year and broken down that’s 200 a day. They also treat about 700 pediatric patients per month.

The staff says teamwork and collaboration has helped them provide the best for the patients that come through the doors.

“We are very fortunate, we have staff that come from all over the country, so they bring those ideas and best practices to cape coral and we are always trying new things,” said Elisabeth Dowd, Director of Emergency Services, Cape Coral Hospital.

The ENA Latern Award remains in the departments for three years.
