Vehicle found in fatal hit and run of child, person of interest developed

CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- Police say they've located the vehicle they believe was used in Monday's fatal hit and run that killed an 8-year-old Cape Coral girl.

According to Cape Coral Police, the vehicle has been seized and is considered evidence.

They've also developed a person of interest in the case, but have not released any additional information yet.

8-year-old Layla Aiken was hit by a vehicle Monday morning as she waited for her bus with her brothers. She was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The suspected vehicle fled the scene.

Investigators say that Layla was sitting on the edge of the roadway on the northeast corner of the intersection at NE 3rd Avenue and 19th Terrace at 6:18 a.m. That's when the suspect was driving south on 3rd Avenue, and made a very sharp left turn, hitting Layla. The vehicle left the scene eastbound on 19th Terrace without providing aid or information.
