Manatee rescued from Caloosahatchee River

Posted

LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- An injured manatee with apparent boat-related injuries is now undergoing rehab at the Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa.

Florida Fish and Wildlife officials say the manatee was first spotted in the Caloosahatchee River just south of Shell Point near Grandview Road.  It was having problems submerging, meaning she likely has a broken rib or a punctured lung.

November is Manatee Awareness Month, and FWC is reminding boaters that it may be difficult to see manatees since they swim and rest just below the water's surface.

They say boaters wearing polarized sunglasses are more likely to spot them underwater.
