Apple switches gun emoji to water pistol

Apple has opted to switch out its gun emoji for something a little less risqué.

The Cupertino, California giant announced plans to use a squirt gun instead of the gun emoji, the company announced in a news release

The move comes after Apple received backlash for the emoji as the nation debates gun control. A group called DisarmTheiPhone wrote a letter to Apple asking the company to take down the gun emoji.

In the letter, the group praised the company but had a link for people to tweet Apple CEO Tim Cook to ask him to take down the gun emoji.

Apple also announced that there will be 100 new and redesigned emojis, which include more gender options for existing emojis as well as a new rainbow flag.

The emojis will be available this fall with the iOS 10.
