Average American who celebrates Mother's Day will spend $196

Mother's Day is this Sunday, and it appear most Americans will open up their wallets in celebration of the day.

According to the National Retail Federation, 84 percent of American adults will celebrate Mother's Day to honor their moms or other women in their lives. Of those 84 percent of American adults, the average person will spend $196.

What are Americans buying for Mother's Day? According to the NRF, 75 percent of Americans will purchase a greeting card, 67 percent will buy flowers and 55 percent will partake in a special outing. Even though only 35 percent will purchase jewelry, Americans will collectively spend more than $5 billion on jewelry.

All told, spending for Mother's Day will total $25 billion.

“Mother’s Day spending has been growing consistently over the past several years, and this year’s spending is expected to be the highest in the 16-year history of our survey,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. “Consumers are excited to celebrate all the moms in their lives, and retailers are ready to inspire consumers with unique gift options.”

The National Retail Federation's Survey involved more than 7,000 respondents.
