Lincoln Police Chief Jeff Bliemeister said during a joint press conference with FBI Omaha division that they believe the body found on Monday night to be Sydney Loofe, but that there still needs to be an official autopsy to confirm the identity.
"We believe that it's Sydney," he said. "We have a strong belief based upon the entirety of the investigative process. But actual confirmation will come following the other testing including the autopsy."
Authorities said the autopsy has not yet been scheduled.
In a post on Facebook last night, Loofe's family indicated they believed her body had been found. Loofe was reported missing by her family on Nov. 16.
Authorities said Tuesday the body had been found in rural Clay County, not near a town. Bliemeister said the digital footprint led the Nebraska State Patrol to their discovery during a search in the area.
TIMELINE: Sydney Loofe disappearance developments
Bailey Boswell, 23, and Aubrey Trail, 51, remain persons of interest in the case but are not suspects at this time, Bliemeister said.
"We're continuing to speak with Aubrey Trail and will continue to do so," he said. "By their own statements on social media, we believe that Aubrey Trail and Bailey Boswell were two of the last people to have been known to have been with Sydney prior to her disappearance."
He also added: "We do not believe there is any ongoing risk to the safety of the public based upon this investigation."
LPD said they have not been able to verify Boswell's claim she dropped Loofe off at a friend's house.
"This investigation is ongoing," FBI special agent Randy Thysse said. "It takes resources and time. We ask for your patience."
