PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Fire crews responded to an apartment fire Monday at a senior living complex in Port Charlotte.

According to Charlotte County Fire, one person was transported to a local facility in stable condition.

The fire broke out Monday afternoon at the Oxford House in the Charlotte Square Condominium complex.  That's a 55+ community located on Gertrude Avenue off Harbor Boulevard.

When firefighters arrived on scene just before 1:30 p.m. they found smoke coming from the eaves and from a second-floor apartment, and occupants of the multi-family two story building were evacuating into the parking lot.

Firefighters made entry into the building, preformed a primary search and found no one in the apartment.

Firefighters work able to get the fire under control at 1:50.

The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office is urging drivers to avoid the area while fire crews work.
