Ordinance causing parking woes for restaurant

Posted

NAPLES, Fla. -- The Collier County Commission says the parking garage directly across Vanderbilt Beach Road from the Beach Box is for beach goers only, not those who are going to stop at the restaurant.

The commission voted 3-2, Tuesday to uphold the ordinance, but some wonder how it will be enforced.

" I think it's a bad idea, I think everybody pays to park and they should be able to go where they want to," said customer Michelle Denson.

County Commissioner Penny Taylor doesn't see it that way.   She says since tourist tax dollars were used to build the garage, it can only be used for beach access.

Commissioners do plan on amending the ordinance which could allow for beach box parking again, but the restaurant would have to go through an application process for customers to park there again.

"Some people don't want the Box open as late, there's a noise ordinance, that there's traffic coming up and down that is necessary," said customer Koulton Murdick.

The Beach Box's owner says he's not sure if he will challenge the county commission's decision, or go out of business.
