An overturned fuel tanker caused all homes within a 1000-meter radius to be evacuated Sunday, according to Cape Coral Fire Department.

The evacuation took place on Del Prado Boulevard, between Averill Boulevard and De Navarra Parkway at 4:07 a.m. Sunday.

Multiple crews on the scene found a tractor tailer fuel truck on its side in the median between the North and southbound lanes, leaking fuel, according to a report.

The driver of the truck suffered minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital.

Almost 9,000 gallons of fuel was leaking from the truck.

Containment booms were placed in the gully of the median as well as coverings over nearby storm drains to prevent fuel from absorbing into the ground and draining into the canals, said CCFD.

Firefighters are also using fire suppression foam and water to blanket the gasoline vapors which are highly flammable.

While crews were working to de-energize the fuel tanker, a spark occurred and the truck caught fire. The fire has since been extinguished.

Del Prado Blvd. N was closed in both directions for a few hours.
