NAPLES, Fla. — Naples Zoo is mourning the loss of a 17-year-old black bear.

Toby died of cancer. The zoo says he was recently diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma in his back left leg. He received oral chemotherapy treatments, but the zoo says his health declined rapidly. After deciding further treatment would not help him, zoo veterinarians euthanized him.

He served as an ambassador, representing his species in Southwest Florida, even making an appearance on the Today Show.

Naples Zoo rescued Toby and his sister in 2008.
