Crews working to free five beached whales near St. Petersburg

REDINGTON BEACH, Fla. — Crews are working to rescue five whales in distress in the Gulf of Mexico.

Deputies from Florida Fish and Wildlife and officials from the Clearwater Marine Aquarium are on the shore of Redington Beach where the whales are stranded close to shore.

Tents have been placed over the whales to try and keep them cool.

Officials received the call for help around 6:41 a.m. Monday.

Large crowds have been gathering along the beach to watch the rescue efforts.
